The Pub

The Portland Arms is a traditional English pub serving fine real ales, specialty beers from around the world and home cooked food in a cosy, friendly setting.

There has been an Inn on this site since the 1880’s when it was called the Scales Hotel.  The current building dates from the 1930’s and was designed by renowned architect Basil Oliver (1882-1948) who designed a number of “Improved Public Houses” for Barclay Perkins.

Hayley and Steve Pellegrini are the licencees and have been running The Portland since 2004.

The pub has four distinct areas;  the Saloon bar is the heart of the pub with it’s real fire place, original wood paneling and open layout.  This is also the main dining area for the pub where you can select from a range of great home-cooked pub food and bar snacks.  See our Food & Drink section for more

The Public bar is a more cosy space, well stocked with craft beer and featuring a full size pool table. It leads on to our Courtyard garden.  It features an African hut with covered and heated seating areas and a brick built BBQ.

Lastly our famous 200 capacity Venue space is an essential part of the local live music scene and available to hire for any event or gathering.  You can read more on the Venue pages.
