The Portland Arms,

I first played The Portland Arms a number of years ago when I supported Nick Harper there. I immediately fell in love with it. Ever since then, whenever I want to include a Cambridge gig on a tour, it is my, “go to”, venue.

As with so many of the UK’s small venues, this time of crisis is being made even worse by the financial difficulties that they are facing. Government grants have fallen short of what they need to survive, especially as they are still having to pay rent on the building, even while closed.

The Portland is in just such a situation. We need to do whatever we can to safeguard our country’s small music venue circuit, for the good of the wonderful staff that run them, but also to ensure that they are still there for us to gig in, as and when this virus finally buggers off.

So, I am proud to be part of this fundraiser, and I hope that we can, in some small way, help them through this horrible time, and show them how much they mean to us musicians, and music fans alike.

Gaz Brookfield
Bristol based, Gaz Brookfield, is predominantly a solo acoustic musician. Although, on occasion you will find him on stage with his band, The Company of Thieves. Since winning Acoustic Magazine’s Singer/songwriter of the year in 2010 he has spent the last decade on the road. As a result, he has earned a strong and loyal following all over the UK, and beyond.

He was the first independent musician to sell out Bristol’s, The Fleece, (450 cap), The Bierkeller, (750 cap) and more recently, SWX, (1000 cap).

With five previous studio albums, and seven live ones already behind him, Gaz has just released his sixth studio album, “Lostfolk”. As a fiercely independent musician, he continues to tour up and down the country, bringing his brand of upbeat, sometimes happy, sometimes sad, often humerous, and always catchy, folk songs, selling out venues wherever he goes, and all without the aid of a manager, agent, or record label backing. Just a guitar, a van, and a steadfastly belligerent refusal to give in.
